With the generous support of the Vancouver Foundation and in partnership with the City of Vancouver, Sustainable Cities is leading an initiative to map youth assets in Vancouver. This project responds to the need identified by youth and youth service providers for a central hub of information on opportunities and resources for youth in Vancouver. It will also build capacity among youth and their adult allies to use asset mapping as a tool to engage young citizens in thinking about their communities, what makes them great and what can be done to make them better. The project will result in an online map, hosted on the City of Vancouver’s youth website, which will display youth generated information about services, opportunities, and amenities across the city.
Coupled with the beginning of this project, Sustainable Cities is proud to be launching “Mapped: A Youth Community Mapping Toolkit for Vancouver.” This resource covers the theory and application of asset mapping with youth. It includes three cases studies and three workshop outlines and, it would be a valuable source of information for planners and youth service providers who are interested in using asset mapping to engage young people. The toolkit is the result of collaboration between the City of Vancouver, the LifeCycles Project Society, Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House and Sustainable Cities.
UPDATE:
So far, we have engaged over 300 youth and 30 youth serving organizations. On May 28th 2011 the project will culminate with an official launch party for the online map. Youth who have been involved with the project will have the opportunity to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses in youth assets across Vancouver and to design the ultimate youth space.
Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and other elected officials will be in attendance to hear from the youth of Vancouver.
Great work everyone!
