Sustainable Cities: PLUS Network

The Sustainable Cities: PLUS Network is made up of over 40 towns, cities, regions and communities in developed and developing countries sharing experiences, best practices, expertise, tools and learning about long–term planning for urban sustainability. PLUS stands for Partners for Long-term Urban Sustainability. Peer learning events include peer exchanges and biennial conferences.

Three African Cities: Durban, Dakar and Dar es Salaam

Now in its second three-year phase, the PLUS Network African Cities project has three priorities: promoting good governance, advancing environmental sustainability, and accelerating the transfer of knowledge among and beyond the three African cities Durban/eThekwini (South Africa), Dakar (Senegal), and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). The project funder is CIDA, with financial and in-kind contributions from local NGOs and municipalities.

Youth Engagement in Sustainability Planning

At ICSC, we are actively engaging youth in community development initiatives both locally in Canada and globally. Our work with youth, through our project officers and youth interns, focuses on youth visioning, planning for the future of their communities, youth strategy development, community asset mapping to identify community strengths, resources and areas for improvemen, and Youth Friendly City Guides. Go to Youth-Led Development.

Centering Women in Reconstruction and Governance

The goal of this project is to build capacity for grassroots women in two tsunami-affected Sri Lanka cities and their municipal governments through mobilizing local women to participate in decision making about their communities and reconstruction; training them in various livelihood skills; and building networks of women sharing their experiences in post-disaster reconstruction to improve community well-being.

Cuba Food Security: Sustainable Dairy Farming

This award-winning CIDA-partnership project brought together - in a farmer-to-farmer framework - the expertise and animal husbandry skills of Canadian dairy farmers with the ingenuity of Cuba's intensive pasture management methods to amplify and document a sustainable, pasture-based dairy production system that could serve as a model for Latin America. Results have included doubling of milk production while decreasing dependency on feed imports.
