Three African Cities: Durban, Dakar and Dar es Salaam

Now in its second three-year phase, the SCI African Cities project has three priorities: promoting good governance, advancing environmental sustainability, and accelerating the transfer of knowledge among and beyond the three African cities Durban/eThekwini (South Africa), Dakar (Senegal), and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). The project funder is CIDA, with financial and in-kind contributions from local NGOs and municipalities.
The goal of this project is to build capacity for grassroots women in two tsunami-affected Sri Lanka cities and their municipal governments through mobilizing local women to participate in decision making about their communities and reconstruction; training them in various livelihood skills; and building networks of women sharing their experiences in post-disaster reconstruction to improve community well-being.
This award-winning CIDA-partnership project brought together - in a farmer-to-farmer framework - the expertise and animal husbandry skills of Canadian dairy farmers with the ingenuity of Cuba's intensive pasture management methods to amplify and document a sustainable, pasture-based dairy production system that could serve as a model for Latin America. Results have included doubling of milk production while decreasing dependency on feed imports.
