We work with cities in developed and developing countries with projects in such diverse places as South Africa, China, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Mexico.
Believing that the wisdom of a city lies with its people, we work collaboratively, bringing different sectors, disciples and demographics together. We work to connect and mobilize people around technological and social innovations for urban sustainability.
Sustainable Cities conducts practical demonstration projects in partnership with cities and stakeholders to show how urban sustainability can be implemented and to support long-term planning. The project types include urban design, land-use planning, transportation, solid waste, urban greening, food security, energy efficiency, disaster mitigation, poverty reduction, governance, and multi-party participatory processes.
At Sustainable Cities, we support youth-led development initiatives and the engagement of young people in sustainability planning. Our programs are both national (in Canada) and international in scope. We work with youth, local governments, First Nations and community organizations to do youth visioning and asset mapping, long-term sustainability planning, youth entrepreneurship training and business plan development, and to create youth strategies.
Each year we profile three community projects from our Member Cities that are compelling, impactful and relevant. Your generous donations will help make a difference!
This year we feature projects from Sri Lanka, Dar es Salaam and Vancouver.
Your donations can help to:
- purchase clay pots to allow women in the Kurunegala slums to grow vegetables and beans
- buy bedding, linens, towels, baby crib covers, baby bottle warmers for Aboriginal women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside
- buy enough seeds for an entire season for a school’s urban agriculture project in Dar es Salaam
For all of these projects, even a little goes a long way!
