Dream Vancouver Public Engagement Conference

On Sunday, October 21st, 2007, members of the Sustainable Cities: PLUS Network joined with over 250 participants from Metro Vancouver for Dream Vancouver, an all-day conference which led participants from their dreams about Vancouver to possible agendas for change. The conference was facilitated by Bliss Browne, internationally-renowned speaker and president of Imagine Chicago.

Sustainable Futures: A Bootcamp for Long Range Planners

From Oct 25th-27th, participants from the Sustainable Cities: PLUS Network participated in a course sponsored by ICSC and SFU called “Sustainable Futures: A Bootcamp for Long Range Planners”.  The instructors were Dr. Nola-Kate Seymoar, CEO and President of ICSC and Ken Cameron, CEO, Home Owner Protection Office. This course explored three award winning methodologies for very long-range planning used by Canadian communities and cities around the world and applies them in a hands-on case study approach to the City of Surrey.

Vancouver Peer Exchange

Several members of the Sustainable Cities: PLUS Network met in Vancouver on Oct 23rd and 24th, for a 2-day peer exchange that provided member cities with an opportunity to update each other on planning and sustainability initiatives. Participating cities were: Bucharest (Romania), Durban (South Africa), Dakar (Senegal), Matamoros (Mexico), San Jose (Costa Rica) and Saint John (Canada).

Just Released: The Sustainable Cities: PLUS Planning Cycle

This paper describes principles and a planning cycle for long-term planning for urban sustainability. They were developed based on the International Centre for Sustainable Cities’ experience between 2001 and 2004 with citiesPLUS – the 100 year plan for Metro Vancouver and work by Dr. Nola-Kate Seymoar and a team representing eight different planning frameworks, and reflect additional work by Isabel Budke and the Sustainable Cities: PLUS Network Steering Committee, co-chaired by Jane McRae and Bob Miller.

Appreciative Inquiry Master Class

On Monday, Oct 22nd, Bliss Brown, one of America's leading social innovators and the founder and president of Imagine Chicago, led a Master Class on Appreciative Inquiry and Public Engagement.  During the course, participants explored questions such as “How do we create opportunities for exchange of ideas, resources and experiences that generate new public knowledge, expand civic engagement and enhance the public good?”
