More than four years in the making, PLUS Network member city Calgary's new integrated municipal development and mobility plan outlining a bold sustainability-based vision for the next 60-70 years went to public hearing on June 23rd, with more than 150 Calgarians speaking for and against it.

On June 20th, PLUS Network staff hosted a 16-member delegation from Australia and New Zealand for one day of their study tour in Vancouver, Canada - a municipality in the PLUS Network Metro Vancouver region. The delegation, which included Deputy Mayor Stephen Yarwood from PLUS Network member city Adelaide, Australia, was heading home from the ICLEI World Congress in Edmonton, Canada.

Representatives of 9 PLUS Network cities from four countries met in Edmonton for the ICLEI World Congress from June 14 to June 18. They were among more than 600 delelgates from 57 countries who gathered to share their perspectives and practices on urban sustainability and climate change.

Youth Leadership on Solar Energy in Durban |

Inspired by their school science teacher and by what they learned at the PLUS Network Biennial Conference in Durban last September, two local students came up with the dream of a solar school and started their campaign to raise funds for a solar thermal system to heat the school swimming pool. Sufficient funds are now in place to make the project a reality.

Sri Lanka Women's Centres Open for Community Business |

The Women's Community Resource Centres of Matara and Moratuwa, two PLUS Network cities in Sri Lanka, are open and serving the women of their communities as safe places to organize events, exchange information, and receive livelihood and mobilization training and education. The Moratuwa Centre includes a health clinic.

Colima Hosts Urban Forum on Mobility and Transportation |

PLUS Network city Colima, Mexico, hosted its First Urban Forum in February 2009 on mobility and transportation. The objective was to highlight the importance of space and land-use planning in supporting various forms of transportation. Bringing together examples of international, national and local experiences in transportation strategies based on principles of urban sustainability would also serve to increase awareness of the new perspectives needed to transform our transportation systems to achieve sustainable urban mobility.
