Monday, 11 January 2010 10:06

compostingThe YES Network (Youth Engagement for Sustainability) is an initiative from The Co-operators and Sustainable Cities that aims to engage youth to become active contributors to making their homes, schools and communities better and more sustainable places to live, work and play.

The YES Network is a network of teachers, schools, students and community organizations working together to support youth led sustainability action projects in Regina and surrounding area.

For the 2009-2010 school year, five Regina and area high schools will be participating in the program.

  • Campbell Collegiate
  • Greenall High School
  • O’Neill High School
  • Sheldon Williams Collegiate
  • Thom Collegiate

The goals of the program are as follows:

  • youth_presentationTo Develop Youth to be Leaders on Sustainability – The project will provide training and professional mentorship to students to help develop them into leaders on sustainability in their schools and communities.
  • To Promote Youth Led Initiatives in the Community – Youth have unlimited ideas and enthusiasm when it comes to issues surrounding sustainability. This project aims to provide resources and support to help youth pursue these ideas.
  • To Provide Support For School Clubs – The Sustainability Youth Coordinator will provide support to high school students and teachers to help develop project plans, set goals and complete sustainability based projects.
  • To Facilitate Networking Between High School Students – The project will facilitate networking of student environmental clubs to help build momentum for the individual projects, create a sense of a larger movement on sustainability and to allow the students to share ideas and knowledge around their projects.
  • To Facilitate Community Involvement – The project will try to connect student projects to expertise and knowledge from community organizations or individuals. This will work to provide students with an understanding of the community resources and supports around them.

A new blog has been launched, which will feature information about the program, updates on the school projects and interesting tidbits about issues in and around Saskatchewan.
