Hal Kalman

Sustainable Cities is pleased to announce that Dr. Harold Kalman has been awarded The Heritage Canada Foundation Gabrielle Léger Award for Lifetime Achievement in Heritage Conservation “in recognition of his momentous contribution as practitioner, advocate and educator in the field of heritage conservation in Canada.”

The National Awards Program is the most prestigious recognition for achievement and excellence in the field of built heritage conservation in Canada.

Sustainable Cities has worked with Hal on four projects in China: the Revitalization of the Zhongshan Road Neighbourhood in Qingdao; the rehabilitation design for an old courtyard building within that neighbourhood; the Shaohao Mausoleum historic precinct in Qufu; and a cultural development strategy for Shanghai. Over the course of the past ten years, Hal has had a significant impact on our thinking about sustainability. Not only did he have a major influence on our organization, through our former Chair, Mike Harcourt, he influenced the work of the Prime Minister’s External Advisory Committee on Cities and Communities. In particular his arguments led to the inclusion of culture as one of the four elements of sustainable development in our work and in theirs. This redefinition of the elements is now becoming accepted across Canada.
