Youth-Led Development: ICSC at WUF IV in China

WUF 4 logoAt the World Urban Forum IV held in Nanjing, China, in November, ICSC President Nola-Kate Seymoar presented a case study of a program of youth-led development and its contribution to urban sustainabilty. (Download icon Youth-Led Development WUF IV (363.7 kB))

The study documents the history of the program, its gains and losses and its future directions in an effort to reflect lessons being learned as change is introduced.
The key lessons relate to:
• Unwavering commitment;
• Co-design;
• Two simultaneous paths: specialization and mainstreaming;
• Active learning;
• Managing risk and conflicts;
• Use of seed funding;
• Appropriate evaluation and monitoring; and
• Nurturing innovation.

Co-authors included Mayor Adam Kimbisa of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Steven Milambo, Youth Mayor of Kinondoni, Tanzania; Doug Ragan, ICSC Senior Associate; Grace Myong, ICSC Associate and former Environmental Youth Alliance member; Amber Zirnhelt, ICSC Project Officer.
